And Get a Gig for Your Band

A Concert or a Dance

With an Emphasis on the Swing Music of the WWII Era

This is an excellent opportunity to promote your band and to promote Big Band music and Swing Dancing in general. It could also lead to an annual gig for your band when Congress approves the second Sunday in August every year as an Annual Day of Remembrance.

A Day of Remembrance could include a concert, swing dancing, entertainment of the era, displays of WWII military equipment, WWII reenactors and food. It should also honor local veterans and encourage them to talk about their war experiences. The food could range from a buffet or barbecue dinner to a variety of food booths or simply hot dogs and ice cream stands.

Spirit of 45 events can range from a picnic or BBQ in a park, with a big band concert and an area for dancing, to a concert in a local theatre or a community swing dance, perhaps a sock-hop in the style of the 1940's, in a local hall or high school gym. It could also be a swing dance in a local organization's facilities, like an American Legion or VFW hall or Moose and Elk Clubs.

Entertainment could also include a USO-style stage show featuring swing music, dancers, a local comedian and a few speeches by politicians (They love this and it could be a factor in garnering support for the event).

Taps Across America should be part of all Spirit of 45 events

This will be nation-wide pause, a shared moment of prayer and reflection for Americans to consider the blessings we've all enjoyed because of the courage, commitments and sacrifices of our veterans and the Greatest Generation.

At Twilight in each time zone across the country, in the time-honored tradition of our nation's military, trumpeters and buglers all across the country will join together in the playing of Taps in a united salute to honor our veterans of all wars, past and present

Your band can participate in this national happening by having a trumpet player or two play Taps during your Spirit of 45 event.

Suggestions for Finding a Local Sponsor

In any city or community, the best place to start is always City Hall. Contact the mayor or city council and encourage their participation in a national salute to veterans of all wars.

Then contact the Chamber of Commerce or the Jaycees and approach local clubs and organizations, especially those with elderly members and a focus on veterans, like the VFW and American Legion or Moose and Elks clubs.

There are countless organizations that might be interested and have the facilities and finances necessary to host an event. You might also find churches and private parties that will be interested in a swing dance featuring your band.
