The Keep
The Spirit of '45 Alive National Day
of Remembrance is a day for our nation to remember and reflect
upon the courage and contributions of our WWII veterans and the Greatest
Generation through celebrations in cities and communities all across America.
The variety
of Spirit of 45 celebrations is virtually unlimited. They can range from
community and company picnics or barbeques in city parks to concerts with
big bands or community bands featuring the music of WWII and an area for
swing dancing. Displays of WWII military equipment with WWII reenactors
are always popular.
Other possibilitie
include stage shows with a big band, singers, dancers and comedians in
the style of the Bob Hope USO shows that honored members of the military
and veterans for so many years.
Celebrations
could also be a swing dance in a local organization's facilities, like
an American Legion or VFW hall, or Moose and Elk Clubs. Perhaps a community
swing dance -- maybe a sock-hop in the style of the 1940's in a local
hall or high school gym. Many private parties may also be interested in
hosting a Spirit of 45 event.

All
Spirit of '45 celebrations should include participation in Taps
Across America
This will
be a nation-wide pause, a shared moment of prayer and reflection, to
consider the blessings we've all enjoyed because of the courage, sacrifices
and commitments of our veterans and the Greatest Generation.
Then, in
the time-honored tradition of our nation's military, trumpeters and
buglers all across the country will join together in the playing of
Taps at Twilight in their time zone in a united salute to honor our
veterans of all wars, past and present.

Spirit
of '45 celebrations should also include participation a Stories
of Service program.
This project
is an effort to encourage veterans and senior citizens to write or record
their memories of WWII for inclusion in a Library of Congress database
and on the web. The project will enable future generations to learn
the history of WW II through first hand accounts from people who were
directly involved.

The
plan is to perpetuate these celebrations with an annual Day of Remembrance.
A bill has been submitted to Congress to continue this tradition
by making the second Sunday of every August an annual National Day
of Remembrance. |
