This is an event that began in San Jose in 2007 and has now expanded all across the country. Well over 300 communities and organizations are organizing events. A bill has been submitted to Congress to make the second Sunday in August an annual national day of remembrance to ensure that future generations remember and respect the courage, sacrifice, and service of the “Greatest Generation." Typical celebrations in cities and communities across the country include entertainment, music of the era, the playing of Taps and a Stories of Service program to videotape the memories of veterans and members of the Greatest Generation for inclusion in a Library of Congress database to preserve these stories for future generations. There will also be plenty of food, displays of military equipment, veterans and battle reenactment organizations. The Swing Solution is the event's legacy band, having played the first event in 2007 and every year since. The band has also been instrumental in encouraging big bands all across the country to promote Spirit of '45 events. The band also originated the Taps Across America project, which is encouraging buglers participating in Spirit of '45 events to play Taps in honor of our veterans of all wars. And to encourage trumpeters and buglers all across the country to join in a united salute to veterans by playing Taps at sundown in their time zones. Links to More Info:
